if you leave me no choice?
I very much try and stay clear of politics in this blog. [RealityTVelection.com (coming very soon...I promise) will have politics galore!] But this has bothered me for some time, so here goes:
Chuck Hagel Republican senator from Nebraska voted with the Dems this week on a withdrawal timeline for Iraq. Naturally, Hagel, Democrats and anyone who has advocated for anything like this has gotten torn to shreds by those who are in support of the war saying something to the effect of “you strengthen our enemies and dishearten our troops with your lack of support.” Basically: you support the enemy, shut up and stop hurting America.
I find this completely, and utterly bizarre. The current administration, regardless of your opinion of them, has been nothing if not steadfast in policy. From everything I’ve read through the years, I’d go a step further and say the approach has been more akin to “my way or the highway”. That’s fine. That’s -an- approach. I think it’s the wrong one, but resoluteness in a time of struggle has its merits. But if you don’t listen, and attack anyone who says something that disagrees with you– what do you expect them to do?
If you give other officials who have been elected by the American people to do a job, no choice but to pass legislation in order to get their point across, what do you expect? This is what frustrates me. I wish my elected officials only showed complete support for the brave young men and women overseas, but and I’m infuriated when politicians grandstand. But when you have an administration that seemingly refuses to listen– you’ve left them no choice. Then to come out and attack officials for “not supporting our troops” angers me. You’ve put them in that position.
Why is that every time I turn on the TV, read the news or listen to NPR lately, I end up a whole lot more depressed with the state of the world than I was five minutes earlier? ::Sigh::

Do what we non-Americans do. Get your news from Jon Stewart on The Daily Show. I have no idea who Alberto Gonzales is or what he does, but hey, it’s not so depressing when it’s delivered on Comedy Central.

Ha. Most of my friends get their news from Stewart and the Daily Show…and an occasional sprinkling of Colbert! I’m switching to all Comedy Central, all the time!

Only those that want to be ignorant of politics should go to Comedy Central for their news. A timetable for the war only exacerbates problems, as troops start coming home in 3 months. Recognize that in the past month, the insurgency has begun to die down. The liberal media, like Stewart, will never admit such due to their liberal agendas. I thought you would be smarter than that Surya.

“The Realist”, I (try to) make it a point to not antagonize readers of this blog. But your comment has compelled me to respond. I can not disagree with you more.
My biggest problem is very simple: you wear your opinions blindly on your sleeve, and dismiss anything that doesn’t fit your worldview. Please re-read my entry. If you even read it a first time. NOWHERE do I endorse a timetable for withdrawal. Nowhere in that post. The reason? Because I don’t necessarily agree with that position. But even if I did, I would have bit my lip and not posted that because my post was something else. It was about idiocy of the current climate in Washington– no one is listening to anyone else. It is quite clear that this administration doesn’t listen to feedback. Because of that, my point is that what do you expect? They will voice their opinions in whatever forum they have available. If you take someone’s voice away (allowing them to have a good faith discussion about what to do about the war in Iraq) then do you really believe that they shouldn’t type or write what they think? Of course they will. Calling them out for hurting America because they have an opinion that differs from yours is stupidity. Yes, stupidity.
And how you respond to a post that doesn’t even directly disagree with your point (that we should “stay the course”) you say “I thought you were smarter than that, Surya”.
Let me candidly say, that in this political climate, I’ll say what I think and believe even if that means you think I’m stupid.
